Bruton Parish Curtains at 2am

See what the inside of the Colonial public Gaol (Jail) in Colonial Williamsburg looks like. The public gaol was in operation from 1707 until 1910! If you were imprisoned here, your cell would not be heated or cooled. Instead, it would be infested with rodents and fleas. You would sleep on a straw mat, be chained to the wall at times and restrained by metal chains on your wrists and ankles, have a small window to peer out of, and a throne for a restroom. Meals would be fed to you through a slit in the wall. Blackbeard's pirates were held here. The cell in this video is an original cell.
